Details

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is a non-governmental organization that invites foreign researchers to Japan to conduct research. The fellowship program is designed to allow researchers to undertake research in Japan for a period of 3 to 6 months. Priority is given to fields of study such as Natural Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Applicants are required to find a host institution in Japan (university research laboratories, national research institutions, or corresponding facilities in the private sector) and obtain a Letter of Invitation from a host professor/scholar prior to application.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be of non-Japanese nationality.
Applicants must have a Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) or be recognized by the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) as possessing equivalent academic qualifications.
Applicants must be 49 years old or younger at the time of application.
Applicants must have a firm basis of occupation in their home countries and must return to their countries upon completion of their fellowship tenure.
Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in English or Japanese.
Applicants should not have past experiences in Japan (priority will be given to those who have never been to Japan).
Applicants must be free from health problems that would interfere with research activities.

Financial Benefits

Monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 for research and stay expenses
Arrival fund of JPY 120,000 to cover part of the initial costs of living in Japan
Round-trip economy class airfare between the nearest international airport to the fellow's institution and Tokyo/Narita/Haneda
Overseas travel insurance including medical treatment and death/disability coverage
