The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as research students (either non-degree or degree students). This is a highly competitive and prestigious scholarship. The application process is conducted through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the applicant's home country. Deadlines vary by embassy but are typically in April-June.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must have the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan (The Gambia is eligible).
- Applicants must be, in principle, born on or after April 2, 1992 (for the 2027 intake).
- Applicants must have completed 16 years of schooling in a foreign country, or be expected to complete it by the time of enrollment.
- Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese.
Financial Benefits
The scholarship is comprehensive and covers:
- Full exemption from entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees.
- A monthly allowance of approximately 143,000-145,000 JPY.
- Round-trip economy class airfare from the applicant's home country to Japan.
