The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering, and health. The scholarships are worth $50,000 per year for three years. The application process typically involves nomination by a Canadian university, with institutional deadlines usually in the fall for the following academic year.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be nominated by only one Canadian institution with a quota. Must be pursuing their first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if they have not completed the undergraduate component). Must intend to pursue full-time doctoral studies and research at the nominating institution. Must have achieved a first-class average, as determined by their institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study. Must not have already received a doctoral scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC. Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international citizens (including from African countries).
Financial Benefits
Fully funded, providing $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies. This covers living expenses and contributes significantly to tuition and research costs.
